Singapore is a former British colony that later became a part of Malaysia and has now been a self-governing nation for nearly 50 years. This tiny, tidy country, which gained its independence in 1965, has 4.5 million people packed into an area about three-and-a-half times the size of Washington, D.C. Although small, it makes up for its size with cultural richness. Although Singapore’s population is predominantly Chinese, Malays, Indians and other ethnic groups comprise its diverse population.
